After months of deliberation and almost 2,000 entries nationwide, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announces the winners of its Search for the Winners Against Asthma (SWAA).

Launched in February 2015, the Search for Winners Against Asthma is a nationwide search for young asthmatic achievers aged 30 years and younger who are outstanding in their respective fields despite having asthma and inspire asthma sufferers that they, too, can win against the condition.



“We decided to target this particular age group because asthma is a common chronic disease of childhood leading to reduced activity, school absences, ER visits and hospitalizations, says Dr. Gio
Barangan, GSK Medical Director.

“It is also during this stage that young people are in the process of developing the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to achieve their goals in life, and as such we want to let them know that asthma should not deter them from realizing their full potential,” Barangan added.

In the youth category of 19 years old and below, Christian Lacza, a student from Navotas City was judged as the grand prize winner.

Christian is one of the 2014 Kabayan Ten Outstanding Public School Students, and 2014 Ten Outstanding Youth Leaders of Navotas City. He was also an awardee of the 2010 Gawad Huwarang

Kabataan of the Antolin Oreta Sr. Foundation and Gawad Modelong Kabataan: Galing at Dangal ng
Malabon of the Arnold Vicencio Foundation. He is also the youngest recipient of the Orator of the Year Award in Navotas National High School.

“When I was young, my asthma attacks were so severe that my mother would have to bring me to the hospital almost weekly. This made me realize that if I cannot excel in physical activities, I have to discover and focus on my other strengths,” says Christian.


“Going to my pediatrician was a constant necessity, and she made sure I get the proper medication and treatment, but more than that she never failed to cheer me up and would always give me words of encouragement whenever I visited her.”

“Instead of letting asthma stop me I stopped asthma from interfering with my life as I pushed myself as a holistic learner-- excelling in academics, student leadership and in various competitions.”

The runner up winners in the youth category are 15-year old student and dancer Christina Chua; taekwondo twins Andre Rafael and Anton Joachim Montero; consistent student scholar Kenneth Angelo Bagay and Dave Andre Labaton who is also a taekwondo medalist.



In the adult category, incoming third year medical student Teesha Banta was judged as the winner.  The 23-year old student from St. Luke’s College of Medicine, was a full scholar in her first two years of med school and graduated Cum Laude from University of the Philippines Los Banos with the degree of BS Biology Major in Wildlife Biology.

She is a lifetime member in two international honor societies but besides her academic achievements, she is also actively involved in community service. As an active Girl Scout, Teesha received two of the highest awards given by the organization-- the Chief Girl Scout Medal and is one the 75 GSP National Young Awardees. She had represented the country in national and international events, specifically as an advocate and a National Peer Educator on Adolescent Female Health.

“Asthma runs in our family but symptoms of severe asthma began when I was in college, which, unfortunately, was also the time when I was so involved in my schoolwork and scouting. My mother, who is a doctor and is also an asthmatic, helped me through most of my journey by taking care of me and reminding me to take my medicines. Actually, because of my asthma, I had to temporarily stop med school because bed rest was advised. But it did not stop me from taking a part-time job as a high school Science teacher. Besides being a doctor, teaching was my second dream job”, Teesha narrates.

“Every time I have my asthma attacks, the only thing on my mind is to get well so I could go back to studying and become a doctor to prove that asthma should not stop you from pursuing your dreams.”

Teesha said she plans to become an OB-GYN or specialize in Pediatric Pulmonology so she could treat asthmatic children.

Her message to other asthmatics? “During our many asthma attacks, we may feel powerless and helpless. We do not have the strength that non-asthmatics have and it may feel like it is the end of our dreams, I had that feeling when I had to temporarily stop med school because of my asthma. Well, these are all lies. Our condition is but another challenge that adds more meaning to each of our achievements, an opportunity to push harder, aim higher, and be better persons and citizens of our country.  Perhaps we were given this condition because we have the ability to turn these "setbacks" into “set-ups” of better things to come. We can defeat asthma and we can conquer our dreams!”

The other winners in the adult category are UP student Ianna Engaño an athlete, musician, artist and social activist; Yasmin Versoza a firefighter and member of the Marikina City Fire Truck crew; Christianne de Vera a triathlete; and Yliah Nina Bosch a registered nurse who is working as an

The SWAA is open to all Filipino citizens or foreigners with a permanent Philippine address that have been diagnosed as asthmatic by a qualified physician.The winners were divided into two categories: Category A (Youth Category) for 19 years old and below and Category B (Adult Category) for 20 years old and above.Applicants can choose to share how they have won against asthma. These may be in various fields including Arts, Academics, Career, and Sports. Applicants were also required to answer the question: How did you Win Against Asthma? The screening committee then used the following criteria for each entry

Evidence of winning over asthma 30%

Online Votes 20%

Part of the judging committee are Dr. Eileen Aniceto from Philippine College of Chest Physicians; Dr. Therese Leopando from Philippine Academy of Pediatric Pulmonologists; and Dr. Carmela Kasala from Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Inc.

The winners will receive the following prizes:  Huawei P7 Smart Phone; Five Thousand (PhP5,000) worth of GCs from Folded & Hung and Twenty Five Thousand (PhP25,000) worth of Sodexo gift certificates.

“A lot of asthma patients have accepted lifestyle restrictions resulting from uncontrolled asthma as the norm, assuming that frequent symptoms, exacerbations and lifestyle limitations are an inevitable

 Synchronize your watches for a grand adventure in ARCA South. The 74-hectare Taguig property, set to become a new “city in sync” as master-planned by Ayala Land, Inc., is hosting a mobile-app integrated adventure run on Saturday, September 19, 2015.
           


SyncRUNize will be unlike other regular 5 km runs as it challenges both body and mind through a number of physical obstacles and mental drills. Racers will first have to download the exclusive SyncRUNize mobile app available on Google Play and iOS. The app directs participants from one checkpoint to another where they will have to accomplish the physical or mental challenge before they can get to the next.
           

ARCA South has partnered with Guerilla Race, organizers of the fierce sport Guerilla Race Series, to specially design the obstacle course. Mental drills, which can include calculations, stock knowledge tests, or abstract reasoning were designed by Go Go Hunt. Other partners are The North Face, Fox, Oculus Archery and as the partner-beneficiary of the event, the Help Educate and Rear Orphans (HERO) Foundation. Part of the proceeds from SyncRUNize will serve as educational aid to the children of soldiers incapacitated or killed in the line of duty.
           

Racers can compete as individuals or as teams of four.  They will get a chance to win P90,000 worth of cash and prizes for individual and group winners. At the end of the race, participants can celebrate their victory at Sync City, where they can enjoy the interactive booths and the food market.

Her name is Ranzelle Ann Sombrero and this is her story of joy. Ranzelle, residing in Tacloban was one of the hundreds of thousands of children greatly affected by Typhoon Yolanda. Perhaps due to the trauma she experienced or perhaps this was how life was for her but Ranzelle was a quiet girl, hardly participating in school activities and always absent due to various illnesses. Thankfully there was someone looking out for her, someone who thought she deserved to experience joy in her young life.

That someone was her Teacher Villa P. Nacilla of Panalaron Central Elementary School in Tacloban. In June 2014 the school became one of the adopted Joy Schools of Mondelez Philippines. Seeing Ranzelle’s undernourished condition, Teacher Nacilla made sure that Ranzelle would be part of Mondelez Philippines’ daily feeding through the Joy Schools program.

“Wala po kasi akong makain minsan sa bahay dahil hindi nakakapaghanda si Lola. Ang nanay ko naman po nasa Maynila. Hindi ko po alam kung nasaan si Tatay,” goes Ranzelle’s story.

Turns out, those daily meals helped do wonders for Ranzelle. The daily rice, viand, fruit and snack she received for nine months helped make up for what she lacked at home. Ranzelle began to be active in class, always reciting, always raising her hand to answer teachers’ questions. Coming to school was exciting; not only because of the full meal she would receive but because of the energy she now had to learn and develop.



In March of this year, Ranzelle not only passed the 4th Grade, she also achieved the 1st Honor rank in her class. Her nutrition has improved and she now even enjoys her school’s playground. Ranzelle is living proof of how with a little joy, great things can happen for the future leaders of the country.

Bringing Joy, Creating the Future. Launched in 2013 during Mondelez Philippines’ 50th year in the country, the Joy Schools program aims to help create joyful centers of learning through interventions for nutrition, teacher training and facilities improvement. Unique in its own right, the Joy Schools aims to help turn sadness into joy for three of the most pressing problems of public elementary schools today.


Now celebrating its 52nd anniversary, the Company formerly named Kraft Foods has seen more than a thousand stories of joy created through the help of its 9-month daily feeding program for undernourished students, urban gardening seminar for schools and parents, teacher values formation and skills training, and facilities improvement to create a conducive and joyful learning environment. All these the Company was able to achieve through the support of its partner, the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

The Results of Joy. In March of this year, 85% of its 1,064 feeding beneficiaries achieved normal nutritional status, from being undernourished. Feeding programs are great motivators for attendance as such 90% of these students became present everyday during the last school year. Furthermore, their constant attendance ensured they achieved and maintained above passing grades for the whole year.

It wasn’t just the students who experienced joy either. Teachers received exclusive training from the Ateneo Center for Educational Development and the Learning Library. Parents received training from East West Seed Foundation and supplies to start their own gardens and grow their own vegetables. Also, schools received books and sports and play equipment for their students’ enjoyment. Truly, joy was felt by everyone. Joy You can Take with You, Always. Lady Ryzza Sanchez, now a Grade 3 student of Joy School Padre Zamora Elementary in Pasay has her own story of joy. Her story starts with as much sadness for Ryzza was a concern for her teachers for being noisy, disruptive and talkative in class. Teachers’ patience was tested, including that of Teacher Lailane B. Atregenio.

“Ryzza, bakit ka hindi nakikinig sa klase?” was Teacher Atregenio’s question.  “Teacher, hindi po ako marunong magbasa.” These were the five words in Ryzza’s story that would help result to great joy in her life. It was through the learning from the Remedial Reading seminar Teacher Atregenio attended and the help of the new remedial reading corner, both provided by Mondelez Philippines that Ryzza began to learn to read. Excited, Ryzza would read even at night, memorizing the words and letters she copied that day in her notebook. She started with words, and eventually moved to books like her favorite “Si Daginding.”

As Ryzza began to read, she also began to gain self-confidence. Now a transformed book lover, Ryzza isn’t part of the remedial reading class anymore but she drops by from time to time to learn some more and create more joy for herself. The stories of Ranzelle and Ryzza tell us that joy cannot be donated or given. It is created together, through partnership and concern for each other.

“Two years into our Joy Schools program we have seen that the true joy comes from the passion and dedication of our partners, teachers, principals and parents,” shares Maria Cindy C. Lim, Head of Corporate Affairs of Mondelez Philippines. “Together, we are able to help the students create joy for themselves, to write and weave these stories of joy that hopefully they will remember forever. We’ve helped create more than a thousand stories so far, and we’re eager to help write a thousand more as we continue our program this year.”

Classic Savory: A perfect fusion of Filipino and Chinese cuisines Being one of Filipinos’ oldest trading partners, the Chinese have brought to the country some of their native dishes, which Filipinos have come to love as their own.

Chinese immigrants in the early days have further influenced the Filipino palate by putting up eateries serving mostly noodles called ‘pancit’ derived from the Chinese term “pian i sit,” which
literally means convenient food.

Migrating in the Philippines in the 1930s, the Ting Brothers from the Fujian Province of China came to learn about the Filipinos’ fondness for the noodle dishes from their country.

After the war, they set up a panciteria, first in Quiapo, which mainly served pancit lomi. After a while, with the panciteria’s increasing patronage, the Ting Brothers put up a bigger eatery which
they named the Savory Luncheonette, or Savory for short.


They then created an additional dish which would become a favorite among its most avid patrons.
That is, the Chinese fried chicken with special gravy, which the Savory Luncheonette would become
well-known for even decades after its first serving.

The second generation of Tings from the side of one of the brothers, Antonio, would soon relaunch the restaurant as the Classic Savory, whose branches are now conveniently situated in malls to make
it more accessible to diners.

The 80-outlet strong Classic Savory restaurant chain still uses the same Chinese chicken recipe of
the first Savory eatery to cook up one of Filipinos’ all-time chicken favorites – the Savory Chinese
fried chicken.

Now known as the Classic Savory Chicken, the dish has stood the test of time – unchanged, timeless… truly a classic. Coming up with the restaurant’s signature dish entails marinating fresh chicken in a secret blend of spices, and then frying it to perfection – making sure that it stays tender and juicy inside. Pairing it with a generous serving of equally delectable gravy makes the Savory Chicken an enviable dish of all restaurateurs in the country.

Meanwhile, Savory’s pancit lomi would be the forerunner of today’s best lomis and has become a classic dish in Classic Savory restaurants. Savory’s original lomi recipe has also been preserved for generations of foodies to enjoy. It has become the Filipinos’ ultimate comfort food with its hearty, thick noodle soup relished with vegetables, seafood and meat.

The Filipino-Chinese restaurant also came up with other dishes, which have been created or adjusted
with the Filipinos’ discriminate palate in mind.Needless to say, the resto has become known for these contemporary dishes as well. These include the Pancit Canton, Pata Tim, Shanghai Rolls, and many more.

 

Classic Savory Marketing Manager Dennis Ting said, “While many of our older patrons have fond recollections of our chicken being their parents' favorite take-home treat, Classic Savory has evolved
into more than our Classic Savory chicken and Lomi. People come here for our other dishes as well. In fact, if you ask Classic Savory diners what their favorite is, you can get as many answers as there
are customers.”

Ting shared that Classic Savory’s Product Development head Larry Mallari collaborates with the resto’s Head Chef in coming up with the new dishes. He added, “The new dishes then go through a panel composed of Classic Savory’s Management Committee, with the main consideration for the dish selection being its taste. Each dish has to be able to stand alone and not just play support to our other hero products.”

What makes Classic Savory dishes appealing is that, while they are of Chinese origin, they have the taste and flavors that Filipinos love as well. For one, Classic Savory’s Crispy Pata Tim, one of its relatively newer dishes, has also become a bestseller as it combines a much-loved Filipino favorite
with the classic Pata Tim.

Ting added, “Ensuring the best quality of food at the restaurant is a central commissary that takes care of all our branches’ requirement, with all chicken, meat and vegetables delivered fresh daily by our suppliers.”

All told, probably the main reason why Classic Savory and the Savory tradition has endured and become a part of the Philippine foodscape is because it has served delicious comfort food that the whole family can enjoy.
